Knowing some skin care tips before tanning is the first step to tanning the right way. Your skin care regime before you get a tan determines the result of the tanning process. More importantly, proper skin care before tanning helps protect your skin from drying and or becoming damaged. Remember that beauty and skin care go hand-in-hand.
Pre-Tanning Skin Care Tips for a Glowing Tan
1. Prepare Your Skin at Least a Day Before Tanning
To get the best results from tanning, you have to ensure that your skin is a clean canvas first. That said, prepare your skin at least a day or so prior to getting a tan. Preparations include exfoliating and moisturizing.
If you are planning to have your nails done or to get a wax, make sure to do it a day before tanning, as well. These activities leave invisible films on your skin that may block absorption of the tanner. These films can also cause an uneven color or your tan to fade earlier than necessary.
2. Exfoliate Your Skin to Remove Dead Skin Cells
Your skin has to be clean and smooth in order to get the best results. Exfoliating your skin removes dead skin cells. It also unclogs the pores and reduces breakouts.
Exfoliating ensures that the tanning solution is applied on an excellent base, that is, a clear skin. This way, the tan is applied evenly and lasts longer.
3. Remove Any Product on the Skin the Day You Tan
Skip your daily regimen of putting on deodorant, perfume, or lotion on the day itself. There are two reasons why you should avoid them. Firstly, these products may bar the tanner from getting onto the skin and preventing the process from fully developing. It may result in either patching or streaking. Secondly, these products may negatively react to the tanner causing irritation of the skin.
4. Apply SPF to Lips
UV rays can cause your lips to become dark or dry. This is why lip care is something you should not overlook when getting a tan. Make sure you apply an SPF lip balm to prevent dry, chapped lips.
Your lips don’t tan so this is an exception to the rule of avoiding products on or before tanning.
5. Use Cream of the Crop Tanning Products

Counterfeit tanning products are everywhere, so beware of using them. Use only the cream of the crop tanning lotions. You will not only get the best result but you can also be assured the lotions are not watery, discolored, or diluted and they won’t harm your skin. And if you are still looking for a tanning product to apply on your skin, you need to make sure you buy only from reputable online shops or salon.
