Tanning oil is an important part of a tanning session. With the amount of tanning oil available on the market, there’s a certain value in learning what makes it so effective. In this article, we’ll discuss how to use tanning oil effectively and some of the best tanning oils available today!
Everything You Need to Know About Tanning Oil
How Does Tanning Oil Work?
Tanning oils work by intensifying the melanin-producing effects of UV rays from the sun or from tanning beds. Some tanning oils work by increasing the blood flow in the skin and stimulating melanin production. These products are called “intensifiers” or “accelerators.” Some accelerators are reported to cause a “tingling” or “warming” sensation on the skin, so they are also called tingling lotions or oils.
Others contain Dihydroxyacetone or DHA, a simple carbohydrate that reacts with the amino acids on the skin to produce the signature brown complexion. These products are called bronzers. DHA-based oils induce a tan that fades once the old skin sloughs off and regenerates.
How long does it take to work? It depends on your skin type. Some people are prone to burning. Other people get tan easier. The key is to do it slowly and to be mindful of the tan your skin can handle. Tanning oils are a tanner’s best friend, as they reduce the amount of time one needs to be under the sun to get a wonderful tan.
Tanning Oil Ingredients
The ingredients in tanning oil should correspond to your intended use. Are you planning on tanning outdoors or in a tanning bed? If the plans veer towards the former, choose a tanning product that has SPF. Tanning beds are made of acrylic, and ingredients such as mineral oil can damage it. A lot of indoor tanning salons offer sunbed-friendly products, so you might want to check the products on their shelves out just to be sure.
The key to a good tan? Good skincare routine. Dry skin results in patchy tans, so make sure your skin is properly hydrated prior to tanning. Exposure to UV rays really does a number on your skin, so choose one that contains skincare ingredients such as:
- Hemp Seed Oil – moisturizes the skin and keeps it supple
- Silicone – prevents skin aging and wrinkles
- Coconut Oil – effective skin moisturizer
- Vitamin E – helps nourish and rejuvenate the skin
- Beta Carotene – linked to a more tan skin tone; known antioxidant
